LANGDON CENTER BIG BAND "USO" SHOW June 18th, 2011
Weatherford, United States
Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and the Dorsey Brothers are coming to the Texas Opry Theater. Not the original bands but their sounds will reproduced by the Langdon Center Big Band from Granbury, Texas.
In its 5 year of existence, the LCBB has put together a show reminiscent of the famous USO Shows of the early forties featuring selections such as “In the Mood,” “Pennsylvania 6-5000,” “American Patrol,” “String of Pearls” and many others. The band also has their version of the Andrew Sisters who will perform “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy From Company D,” Chattanooga Choo Choo,” and other great songs from that era. You will also hear vocal favorites sung by Janice Horak and Weatherford’s own, Steve Markwardt. A popular duet by these two will be “Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree.” Steve’s version of “Mack the Knife” is a crowd favorite.
The Langdon Center Big Band is a full size 22 piece big band directed by Mark Hettle. Mark is a graduate of North Texas State University where he played trumpet in the One O’Clock lab band. He spent many years gigging in the Fort Worth/Dallas area where he was a member of the fabled house band at the Fairmont Hotel. He has also subbed in several well know jazz groups. He recently retired as music director at Mountain View College in Dallas.
The band consists of many former professional players as well as current and retired band directors. They also have a funeral home director, retired nuclear reactor operator, an optician and people in real estate/investments, photography, dog fitness, etc.
If you love big band music, don’t miss this show.
